The PDF has two pages: a monthly tracker with room for 12 habits across 31 days, and a weekly tracker with a short review section (“What went well”, “What got in the way”, “One tweak for next week”). Print as many copies as you like.
How to use this habit tracker
- Start with 2 to 4 habits. Tracking ten things on day one is the fastest way to quit by day four. Add more once the first few feel automatic.
- Make each habit small and specific. “Walk 10 minutes after lunch” is easy to tick off. “Get fit” isn’t. Our list of 100 habits to track has ideas sorted by goal.
- Tick it off right away. Mark the box as soon as you finish, not at the end of the day. That small moment of progress is part of what makes the habit stick.
- Never miss twice. One empty box is normal. Two in a row is the start of a new pattern. If you slip, use our 7-step reset and pick the habit back up the next day.
- Review once a week. Switch to Month view on Sunday and look for patterns. Which days do you miss? The Sunday reset checklist is a good place to do this.
Why tracking habits works
Tracking makes progress visible. Instead of a vague sense that you’re “trying to read more”, you see 14 ticks in a row, and you don’t want to break the chain. Research on self-monitoring backs this up: a 2016 meta-analysis in Psychological Bulletin (Harkin and colleagues, 138 studies) found that monitoring progress toward a goal made people more likely to reach it, especially when they recorded it physically or made it visible.
A tracker is also a mirror, not a judge. A week of empty boxes isn’t a failure. It tells you the habit is too big, at the wrong time, or not tied to anything in your day. Try habit stacking to attach it to something you already do, or shrink it using the ideas in how to start small habits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this habit tracker really free?
Yes. The online tracker and the printable PDF are both completely free, with no account and no trial.
Where is my data saved?
Only in your own browser, on your own device. Nothing is sent to HabitSurge. That also means your habits won’t sync between your phone and laptop, and clearing your browser data will erase them. Bookmark this page on the device you’ll use every day.
Can I print my tracker?
Yes. Use the “Print this month” or “Print this week” button under the tracker to print your current progress. For a blank sheet, download the free PDF above.
How many habits should I track?
Start with two to four. The tracker allows up to 12, but most people do better with fewer. Add a new habit only after the current ones feel easy.
What does the streak number mean?
It’s how many days in a row you’ve completed that habit, counting today (or up to yesterday, if you haven’t ticked today yet). “Best streak” is your longest run so far across all habits.
